LUBE TIPS AND TRICKS FROM BEL-RAY
Here are some great motorcycle/oil and lubrication tips and tricks that you can put in your magazine to help educate your readers. Although oil and lubricants are often the most important part of what keeps a motorcycle running, the “blood” of a bike, they are often the most overlooked. Here are three interesting and educating tips which you can include in your issues!
Bel-Ray Tells You How to Determine What Brake Fluid is in Your Bike
There is a quick test to tell if a brake fluid is DOT 3 and & 4 or DOT 5. Water will mix with DOT 3 & 4 but will not mix with DOT 5. Here is how to test:
- Just take a few drops of the brake fluid and put it in a small container.
- Add a few drops of water and mix
If the water mixes with the brake fluid, it is DOT 3 & 4. If the water does not mix with the brake fluid it is DOT 5. Also, DOT 3 & 4 is yellow/amber and DOT 5 is purple. Bel-Ray Tells You How often should you change the oil in your bike?
If you have a bike that is lubricated by a very small amount of oil and the oil provides lubrication for the engine, transmission and clutch, you should change this oil more often. A good benchmark is every thousand miles. If your oil lubricates only the engine and the engine oil volume is three or four liters, you can run the oil for three thousand miles.
For a race engine you should change the oil every race or every other race. The best advice we could give a customer is to follow the OEM recommended oil change intervals. The OEM usually tell owners to change the oil more often than is necessary.
What Is The Difference Between Cotton and Paper Filters?
Filters that use a cotton-like filter media are called depth type filters. These filters are designed with a cotton-like batting about one inch thick that the oil must pass through before it goes back to the engine. The particles in the oil get trapped in the cotton filter material as the oil passes through. Paper filters are designed by taking paper that a particle of a specific size (such as 40 microns,) that contaminants greater than the micron size will not pass through. The paper is then folded back and forth creating a ring of paper folds. The paper folds increase the surface area of the filter so the oil can pass through at a slow speed, trapping the particles.
